Feedback from those who have completed work experience:

August 2010:

"Overall, the work experience was fantastic.  I got a real feel of the hospital environment, and I felt like I was a member of the clinical staff. As soon as I arrived in the mornings, promptly at 8.30am my first tasks were to make beds.  Every time there was one to make I embraced it. I felt needed and I became increasingly confident in making it myself. My favourite times of the day were breakfast and lunchtime. That is because I fed a patient for the last few dyas who I built a good bond with.  During the feeding times, I felt a sense of trust from him and it has greatly enhanced my communication skills.  I highly recommend students who want to do work experience, to this hospital."

"The three weeks I spent working at West Middlesex University Hospital were incredibly beneficial to me for numerous reasons that extend further than most work experience placements usually provide.  Although strictly non-clinical, I feel the experience has given me a fascinating insightinto the general environment and atmosphere of the hospital, which I could never have obtained through regular schoolwork or research.  Being able to experience the pace and rhythm of a hospital surrounding teamed with talking to doctors from FY1 to consultants truly made my 3 weeks valuable.

"My favorite part of the experience was the kindess and amiability of doctrs and their willingness to answer my questions about procedures, medical school and the working of the NHS....I am thankful for the program and hope to apply again soon."

Thank you for showing an interest in volunteering at West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. We are keen to support young people in gaining the appreciation of the nature of work available in the NHS. It is important that young people can gain experience of the NHS in order to allow them to make informed career choices. At the same time the Trust must ensure that its approach to the provision of Work Experience does not expose our patients, staff or the young people under our care to any undue risk.
