Clinical Imaging (Radiology / X-ray)

What we do

We provide an extensive Radiology service to assist in the diagnosing of trauma and disease.

We are very busy department, seeing a variety of patients  referred to us from A&E, outpatient clinics, hospital wards and GPs.  

We aim to provide a 24 hour emergency service.

We are located at the back of the main hospital atrium (ground floor of the main building), on the left-hand side beyond the pharmacy dispensary. 

The MRI unit is located at the back of the hospital, in the Marjory Warren building, off Park Road.

Clinics and clinic times

We are open Monday to Friday 8.00am to 5.00pm.

Chest x-ray walk-in service: Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.30pm. No appointment is necessary (for patients who have been sent for a chest x-ray by their GP or Consultant).

All other GP requests must pre-book appointments: 020 8321 5872.


We have a wide variety of the latest digital equipment to help us provide the best quality diagnostic service for our patients and healthcare professionals.  These include:

  • Six general x-ray rooms

  • Two CT scanners

  • Four ultrasound rooms

  • Two interventional rooms

  • One MRI scanner

  • One mammography room

We provide a direct access service to GPs for X-rays, ultrasound scans, and barium procedures. 

GP films are reported within 24 hours.

Urgent requests should be faxed to the number above.

Routine requests should either be posted to the department, delivered by patient or by telephone. 

Appointments are not necessary for single chest x-rays. 

Other imaging for NHS patients can be accessed via referral to the relevant clinician. 

IR(ME)R Referral Protocols

All requests for radiological examinations need to be authorised in line with IR(ME)R Legislation.

The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 came into force on 13 May 2000 to implement the European Directive 97/43/Euratom (The Medical Exposures Directive).
