Theatres

We provide a 24-hour emergency service with a dedicated team available day and night. Planned surgery is performed during normal working hours.

We have 8 theatres, 3 of which are dedicated to Day Surgery cases

 

The specialist surgery we perform includes:

 

  •          Trauma & Orthopaedics

  •          Emergency Surgery

  •          Urology

  •          ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat)

  •          Gynaecology

  •          Colo-Rectal

  •          Breast Surgery

  •          Podiatry

  •          Vascular Surgery

 

The department employs over 100 highly skilled staff which includes Theatre Nurses, Operating Theatre Practitioners, Recovery Staff, Day Surgery Nurses, Pre-Assessment Team, Sterile Services and our Central Admissions Team

 

We are not a stand-alone unit and work in collaboration with most departments throughout the Trust and its multidisciplinary team.

 

The Pre-assessment, Central Admissions and Sterile Services Department work closely to ensure that the patient journey is mapped to ensure effective use of time.

 

Team profile

A theatre team consists of:

 

  •          Surgeon and his trainee(s)

  •          Anaesthetist and his trainee

  •          2 qualified theatre staff

  •          1 Operating Department Practitioner/Anaesthetic Nurse

  •          1 Health Care Assistant

  •          1 Recovery nurse

  •          Plus administration staff, porters and cleaners

Patient leaflets

Information leaflets about surgical procedures carried out in the Day Surgery Unit are provided for the surgical patient and their carers.

 

These are distributed from Pre-assessment and throughout the patient Day Surgery pathway.
