Haematology

There is a comprehensive Clinical Haematology service provided at West Middlesex University Hospital. Patients with haematologic cancer including leukaemia, lymphoma, complex anaemias, bleeding anomalies and complex venous thromboses are seen and treated in the department.

The department diagnoses and treats approximately 100 patients with haematologic cancer per annum. In-patients are looked after on Richmond Ward.  The accommodation, medical and nursing care for such patients is provided at Level II as recommended by the National Cancer Standards.  Patients are usually offered the opportunity to participate in national trials.

A rapid access facility for new and follow-up patients and ambulatory care facility for patients with a range of blood diseases is available in the Haematology/Oncology Day unit. Investigations such as bone marrow examinations and treatments such as intravenous chemotherapy are delivered here under medical and senior nursing supervision.

Out-patient clinics are run for patients who are otherwise stable including patients on oral chemotherapy. Approximately 350 new patients are seen per year in the out-patient service.

The department runs a diagnostic Haematology service. This includes testing and advice on a wide range of Haematology tests. Many but not all of the tests are automated. Complex results including microscopy are performed or authorised by Haematology medical staff.

The department operates the Blood Transfusion Service and advises clinicians on the judicious use of blood products.
