Arterial Line: Tube inserted into an artery, usually at the wrist. Can be used to measure blood pressure continuously.
Catheter: Tube. Bladder catheters are commonly used on ITU to assess kidney function and water balance in a patient
Central Line: Tube inserted into a large vein, usually in the neck or groin. Can be used for monitoring and giving medications.
CPR: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. The sequence of actions used to support the lungs and heart in the event of a cardiac arrest with the aim of restoring a spontaneous heartbeat.
Endotracheal Tube: Tube connecting a patient's lungs to the ventilator via the mouth.
HDU: High Dependency Unit
ITU: Intensive Treatment Unit
Nasogastric Tube: Tube from a patient's nose to their stomach. Used for feeding and administration of some medications.
PALS: Patient Advice and Liaison Service. Hospital wide service to advise and support patients, their families and carers
Total Parenteral Nutrition: Nutrition that is delivered directly into the veins without having to be processed by the stomach and bowel.
Tracheostomy: Tube connection a patient's lungs to the ventilator via an opening in the neck.
Ventilator: Machine that supports a patient's breathing
Weaning: The process of decreasing the support delivered by the ventilator until the patient can breathe for themselves
