The ITU

Approximately 550 patients per year are admitted to the Intensive Treatment Unit (ITU) at West Middlesex. It may also be referred to as ICU (Intensive Care Unit).

Our 8 bed unit treats adult patients who have acute, severe, reversible life-threatening problems, especially patients who need a temporary support of their most basic vital functions including heart, lung and kidney function. Patients receive treatment with specialised equipment and continuous monitoring. However, if very specialised procedures or treatment is required, patients may be transferred to another ITU with expertise in that field .

The High Dependency Unit (HDU) provides care for patients with less severe conditions or after major surgery, who require complex monitoring.

Outreach

Some patients who are not in ITU may need some ITU expertise for a short period of time whilst on the wards. This is provided by our Outreach Team.
