Anaesthetics

The Anaesthetic Department provides anaesthetic services to 7 theatres, of which three are used for Day Surgery. All patients are pre-assessed in the Pre-assessment Unit run by the Department of Anaesthesia.

The 7-bedded Intensive care unit and 6-bedded high dependency unit is supported by 4 consultant anaesthetists plus anaesthetic juniors. High level care is extended throughout the hospital by means of an early warning system and outreach service. We also provide resuscitation support for medical and trauma patients in A&E.

The Anaesthetic Department also runs an Acute Pain Service throughout the hospital and provides a 24-hour epidural service and peri-operative care for pregnant women in the maternity unit, which provides care for some 3,500 deliveries per year. Anaesthetic services are also available in the CT and MRI scanners and the Endoscopy Unit if requested.
