Through the pain barrier: Left to right: West Middlesex University Hospital’s Chairman Tom Hayhoe and Chief Financial Officer Simon Marshall, with the Rollapaluza team Jake and Ed
Pedal power was on display at West Middlesex University Hospital on Friday 25th November.
Staff and public took part in a Rollapaluza racing event held in the hospital’s Rumbles Restaurant.
Pairs of competitors raced against the clock and each other to see who could cycle 500m in the fastest time.
Participants included Chairman Tom Hayhoe and Chief Financial Officer Simon Marshall who were cheered on by the watching crowd.
The fasted male cyclist was Irfan Mohammed, Income Recovery Manager, who clocked in a super swift 24.01 seconds.
The fasted female cyclist was Louise Jones, Communications Officer, from Isleworth who managed 32.88 seconds.
Louise said: “I thought I had no chance of winning – I was just glad to stay on the bike in one piece! It was a great bit of cardio and has motivated me to take my old bike out of the garage for a spin.”
The event was held in the hospital to support its involvement with meeting the criteria for the second stage of the Mayor’s London NHS Cycling Strategy.
The strategy aims to encourage cycling among NHS staff and the public.
The event was held at a number of NHS trusts around London and was one of the many elements of qualifying criteria for the challenge of achieving the NHS Cycling Strategy.
The fastest male and female competitors at each trust have been invited to take part in the Rollapaluza finals which will be held at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead on 9th December.
The Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes will be there to give out prizes for the fastest four males and females, and to present certificates to all of the attending trusts who have achieved stage 2 of the NHS Cycling Strategy.
