Volunteers make a difference

The trust's work is supported by a number of volunteers, who are an invaluable resource. Their work alongside our staff makes a real difference.

Volunteering brings a community of people together to share their skills and knowledge in complementing trust activities. Volunteers bring energy, life experience, and commitment. They reflect the local community and can expect a professional and committed response when volunteering with us.

Why volunteer
Volunteering with us is a wonderful opportunity to have a different experience, working alongside mental health professionals. Our volunteers value their contribution, and we recognise the difference they can make.

  • Use your skills and talents, and develop new ones

  • If you are changing jobs, get an insight

  • If you are starting a job, build confidence and skills

  • Enjoy what you do, be supported and appreciated

Who can volunteer?
We welcome everyone who can bring their empathy, humour, and goodwill when volunteering with us. We are reaching out to our community and seek volunteers from different backgrounds, abilities, cultures, genders, ages and outlooks.

We are keen to encourage both men and women. If you have used our services or care for someone who has, you are especially welcome to bring your insights and experience. Volunteers need to be over 18 to apply.

What does a volunteer do?
Volunteers bring their own abilities and insight to our services. They support and inform each other at our volunteer meetings and report their experiences with warmth and good humour. Here are some examples of volunteering, which would depend on your availability:

  • ward visiting

  • working with older people

  • supporting our patient advice and liaison service (PALS)

  • supporting community activities

  • office and reception work

  • supporting group activities

How much time do I need to commit?
We ask for a minimum of six months commitment from you. It could be weekly, for as little as an hour. When you join us we will ask you to attend a volunteer induction course which runs over three days.
