Control of infection

Hand washing

At the West Middlesex we work very hard to prevent infection spreading from person to person. As a result you will notice that health care workers will often wear gloves or an apron when they are looking after you. This is entirely normal and is not something to worry about. On rare occasions it may be necessary for you to be nursed on your own or in a side room. If this is required the reasons will be explained to you at the time.

West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust has a policy of screening all patients admitted to the Trust for MRSA. We are therefore fully compliant with the Department of Health’s recent recommendation that all elective and emergency admissions to the Trust are screened for MRSA. Further details about screening are included within our updated MRSA policy, which is available here.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding infection prevention and control or would like to receive information leaflets on infection control, please contact a member of the Infection Control Team on telephone number 020 8321 6808.

You can help to reduce the risk of acquiring an infection by doing the following:

  • Ensure you always wash your hands, or use a moist hand-wipe after using the toilet / commode and before eating. If you require help with this activity a member of the nursing team will be happy to assist you.

  • Ask your healthcare workers, friends or relatives to clean their hands before visiting you by either using soap and water, or by applying hygienic hand rub. If your visitor has any contact with any of the other patients in the ward, please remind them to use the hygienic hand rub after each contact.

  • We also encourage your visitors to use the hygienic hand rub before entering and leaving ward areas.

  • Please ask your visitors to use the chairs provided and avoid sitting on the bed.

  • Any visitors that have coughs, colds or any other infections are discouraged from visiting as the infection could spread to you and other vulnerable patients.

  • We encourage you to ask our staff if they have washed their hands, or used the hygienic hand rub, before they examine or treat you.

  • If you are concerned that any area is not clean, please report it to the nurse in charge.
