About Us

This film was produced by the students of Roehampton University London in collaberation with West Middlesex University Hospital. We are grateful for their time and expertise.

The West Middlesex University Hospital is a modern, busy acute hospital in West London. We serve a local population of around 425,000 people, covering the London Boroughs of Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames. Our main commissioners of acute services are Hounslow and Richmond & Twickenham Primary Care Trusts.

Employing some 1,900 people, the hospital has around 400 beds. The Trust has an annual budget in excess of £148 million, and has a rolling programme of investment in the latest equipment and technology.  West Middlesex has an impressive record: we perform well in comparative assessments of clinical performance.

A full range of services are provided through four clinical divisions:

  • Women and Children’s Division - including one of the most highly regarded maternity services in West London, an innovative Sexual Health service, Gynaecology and a popular Children and Young People’s service.

  • Medicine Division- includes a busy Accident and Emergency department, highly rated Chronic Disease Management programmes incorporating key services such as diabetes, dermatology, haematology and a very successful acute physician led Medical Assessment Unit. We have a dedicated Stroke Unit, older people’s care wards and rehabilitation. Considerable therapeutic input is provided through teams of in-house therapists.  We also provide Medical Day Care and are a centre of excellence for common cancers, with a day case Chemotherapy Suite.

  • Surgery Division - we undertake a range of surgical services – Orthopaedic, General Surgery including breast, colorectal, urology, ENT, paediatric surgery, surgical podiatry - and have an exceptionally well appointed theatres suite. This includes the West London Day Surgery Centre, a centre for surgery where patients can be home within 24 hours for an extended menu of procedures. We have an excellent Critical Care unit providing ITU/HDU beds.

  • Clinical Support Division - this division supports front line services and includes pathology, imaging, outpatients, health records and pharmacy.

We also provide services to local residents in association with: The Brompton Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Royal Marsden Foundation Trust, Chelsea and Westminster Foundation Trust, North West London Hospitals, Ealing Hospital and the Hammersmith and Charing Cross sites of Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust.

We recognise that part of the strength of the Trust is the dedication and commitment shown by everyone who works here. As a teaching hospital, we understand that we need to support all members of our staff in their personal development, whether that be through clinical qualifications or otherwise. Above all, West Middlesex is an extremely friendly place to work.

Our non-clinical services include:

Information Communication Technology -maintains the information systems in the hospital 24-hours a day, supporting clinical and non-clinical services and allowing patient records to be securely stored, shared and updated.  As well as providing a key development and support service, information management is integral to our approach to patient care.

Workforce Development -focuses on meeting the needs and aspirations of our staff who are our most valuable asset.   Our Education, Learning & Development service, is a faculty based system which incorporates the Faculty of Nursing, Medicine, Leadership & Management, IM&T & Support Services.  We offer flexible and tailored learning opportunities for all staff and students.

Finance and Performance -supporting the delivery of high quality patient care through robust financial management, maximising income and promoting efficient use of resources.

Department of Nursing -provides senior leadership within the organisation as well as overseeing patient & public involvement, complaints management, Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) & a multi-faith chaplaincy service.

Corporate Affairs -combines communications management with legal services, voluntary services, plus support for the Trust Board.

Most of our funding (around 75 per cent) comes from primary care trusts (PCTs) that are funded by the Department of Health and are responsible for commissioning local health services. Our main PCT partners are the primary care trusts Hounslow and Richmond & Twickenham. For more details on our funding, please see our annual report.

Our vision is to become a first class hospital for our community and to provide high quality care in every way.

We recognise that part of the strength of the Trust is the dedication and commitment shown by everyone who works here. As a teaching hospital, we realise that we need to support all members of our staff in their personal development, whether that be through clinical qualifications or otherwise.
